Total Full Moon Eclipse in Bharani

This New Moon will be in the nakshatra Bharani, called ‘the star of restraint’. Bharani also means bearing, or ‘she who bears’ is the second nakshatra of the zodiac, symbolised by the yoni, the female reproductive organ. Bharani deals with transforming the creative impulse into physical manifestations, it represents the birthing of ideas into creations. The ruling deity here is Yama, the god of death, representing the necessary cycle of life and death that makes creation possible.

The ruling planet of Bharani is Venus, and this nakshatra is also said to harbor the divine feminine power, Shakti, or the receptive principle. The most important lesson for Bharani is temperance, as there is an inclination toward extremes with this nakshatra.

During this Full Moon the luminaries will be in close conjunction to the nodes (only 3° apart!) resulting in a total eclipse of the Moon, where it gets enveloped in shadow, its luminescence temporarily darkened.

This phenomenon could similarly be described as a darkening of our mind and emotion, areas that are represented by the Moon in vedic astrology. Darkness indicates illusion, ignorance or something that lies hidden for us to see; meaning subconscious behaviors or patterns. Eclipses relates to taking parts from our shadow, and bringing them into the light, just as the Moon travels from its shadow point, back into the light again, bringing something from the dark with it for us to see, enlightening it.

When eclipses fall on the Full Moon, there is usually more emphasis on the emotional aspects of our shadow, surfacing deep emotions, old wounds or intuitive insights about situations or attitudes we may hold about something that are currently unknown to us, that needs to be resolved. In this case the Moon will be on Rahu’s end of the nodal axis, clouding the Moon further with Rahu’s elements of confusion and illusion, potentially clouding our senses during the days surrounding the eclipse.

Remember, the eclipses themselves can be viewed as ‘activation points’ for these energies, and that the energies of the eclipses operate on a half-year basis, until the next eclipse cycle occur, like planting a seed within our minds, that manifest into new ideas over time. This means that you might not get any sudden insights on the actual day of the eclipse, it will just as likely be a more subtle shift, or a beginning of a process that unfolds over the next six months.

In the case of these eclipses on the Aries/Libra axis, we are being asked to heal aspects of our sense of self, our individual needs and visions, and how this manifests in relation to our close relationships with other people. In this case it could mean hidden feelings surfacing about our self, our accomplishments, or about our relationships, do we feel safe to share our deepest self or are we compromising ourselves for the sake of our partner perhaps?

The eclipses can also put us in a state of confusion about what decision to make or which path to follow, and with Rahu ‘swallowing’ the Moon in the sign of Aries, there is also something relating to our sense of identity or our sense of purpose that can shift. Maybe you suddenly want to change course, or go in a different direction entirely.

However, during the days before and after the eclipse it’s not advised to start anything new or make any big decision, so keep your journal close by and take note of whatever surfaces for you, but let it sit until after the eclipse has passed, before taking action. During the Full Moon, Mercury will be in close conjunction with the Sun and Ketu in Libra, with Venus just a few degrees apart, adding even more intensity to this eclipse, as they are the planets of our communication and relationships. You can read more about that in my November update here.

Some questions to reflect upon this Full Moon Eclipse:

❧ Am I embracing myself fully, quirks and all, or is there parts of me that needs integrating?
❧ Am I clear about what it is that I want from my relationships?
❧ Am I following the path I want to be on? What can I do to live my full potential?
❧ What am I ready to let go of in order to become a better version of myself?

It’s not what you have on the outside that glitters in the light, it’s what you have on the inside that shines in the dark.
